Jagoda Walny Nix is a data visualization and design specialist focusing on government open data innovation projects. In 2023, she led the design of NRCan’s Canadian Minerals and Metals Statistics data visualization. Her previous projects include the BERDI environmental assessment database at the Canada Energy Regulator and the then-National Energy Board’s Data Visualization Initiative. Jagoda holds a PhD in information visualization from the University of Calgary, where she learned to use a human-centered design approach to making useful, usable, and engaging data visualizations.

Grassroots Innovation: Transforming Government from the Ground Up
In this talk, we will share the story of our innovative pilot project focused on the data from the Metals and Minerals Exploration Survey. This journey began with Sarah Heath from NRCan, who identified the initial problem. We then recruited Jagoda Walny, who was working for the Canada Energy Regulator, for her expertise and leadership, and finally, the viewpoint of Dianna Miller who joined NRCan midway through the process and had to navigate the project to completion.
