What government needs to know about teaching AI in schools

It’s really, really, mind-blowing difficult for teachers to keep up to date with AI, and effectively teach students what they need to know. AI in school education is at such an early stage of development that we still don’t know what works and what doesn’t. It’s tough.

This session presents a summary of what Australia has learned about AI in school education, and explores the skills that AI professionals, technology professional, futurists, researchers, and others need to share and blend with the skills of teachers in order to empower students to thrive in an AI-powered world.

We’ll discuss how effectively teaching school-age students about AI requires a potent blend of economics, sociology, technology, ethics, and a multitude of other disciplines. It’s a challenge to teach good governance when your class has never heard the concept of governance before! But this is what they must do.

Attendees will learn about Australia’s efforts to further AI education in the classroom, and find out what the education system learned about the process. This talk will be useful for anyone interested in education, AI, teaching complex topics to disparate groups, and bringing government policy onboard with AI and education. It’ll be fun, I promise.
