James Stewart

Partner, Public Digital

James Stewart is Public Digital’s lead technology specialist, helping clients develop the strategy and skills needed to support transformation in organisations dealing with legacy IT or needing to develop new technology skills. James is a non-executive director in the UK Parliament, advises a number of startups, is a member of the Mayor of Hackney’s Digital Advisory Council, speaks regularly at events around the world, and is the author of Budgeting for Change.

Previously James was Deputy CTO of the UK Government, with responsibility for building technology capability across government, and leading government’s adoption of public cloud, open standards and open source. He was also deeply involved in the formation of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre.

A software developer by background, James built and led the technical team operating GOV.UK and a range of other government platforms making sure that tech skills were an effective part of multi-disciplinary teams. He represented UK government at the W3C and on Github’s Customer Advisory Board. In addition to working with Public Digital, James advises a number of startups, is a member of the Mayor of Hackney’s Digital Advisory Council, speaks regularly at events around the world, and is the author of Budgeting for Change.
