Director, Polar Continental Shelf Program, Natural Resources Canada

Sarah Heath is former Director for Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Minerals and Metals Statistics Division. She led the modernization of Canada’s national mining statistics programs, in collaboration with Statistics Canada, to improve data quality and integration with the System of National Accounts. Sarah is now the Director for the Polar Continental Shelf Program, which provides logistics services to science and sovereignty operations in Canada’s Arctic. She joined the public service in 2001 and has held a range positions with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Embassy of Canada to the United States, Privy Council Office, Embassy of Canada to the People’s Republic of China, and Natural Resources Canada. Her career includes three years family leave to raise her children and time in the private sector in Canada and the US as an editor and energy management consultant.

Grassroots Innovation: Transforming Government from the Ground Up

In this talk, we will share the story of our innovative pilot project focused on the data from the Metals and Minerals Exploration Survey. This journey began with Sarah Heath from NRCan, who identified the initial problem. We then recruited Jagoda Walny, who was working for the Canada Energy Regulator, for her expertise and leadership, and finally, the viewpoint of Dianna Miller who joined NRCan midway through the process and had to navigate the project to completion.
